What to expect from AI for the CIO in 2024

AI and DSI in 2024

Since the end of 2022 and the arrival of ChatGPT in our lives, Artificial Intelligence has continued to fuel conversations. Software publishers in particular are adding intelligent functionalities to their applications. It's impossible to start a presentation without a slide dedicated to the subject.

At SmartView, we are often asked about these issues: what is Atlassian's position? What will help us in our use of the tools? Or, more generally, what will change our lives as IT department employees?

Although we're very humble about our knowledge of the subject, we can't remain without answers. So we've decided to develop the theme and seek answers to these questions. What impact can we expect AI to have on CIOs in 2024? This is the subject of the following series of articles. This is just a general overview. The aim is to set the framework for reflection and present the avenues to be followed.

Is artificial intelligence the new siren? What impact can we expect AI to have on the CIO in 2024?

But first, what is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence falls into three categories:

  • Narrow AI: This AI specializes in performing specific tasks, such as Siri, Alexa, or image recognition systems.
  • General AI (or Strong AI): This AI can understand, learn and apply its knowledge in a variety of contexts, and is therefore comparable to human intelligence.
  • Superintelligent AI: This AI surpasses the capabilities of human intelligence, including in the fields of creativity, decision-making and learning.

Generative AI is generally classified as Narrow AI or Weak AI. Although it is advanced and capable of producing impressive results, it is specialized in specific tasks. It does not possess the general understanding or awareness associated with general AI or superintelligent AI. Generative AI is designed to generate new and original content (such as text, images, music). It is based on data sets and deep learning models. But it always operates within the limits of its specific training domain.

Bad news (or good, perhaps): only weak AI exists today! The rest is science fiction.

What questions should we ask ourselves?

We've already drawn up a list of questions we feel are important. Of course, this list is not exhaustive. If you have any ideas for enriching it, please let us know what you think and comment!

How will AI help me in my daily activities?

Whether for engineering or production departments, there are already "intelligent" solutions that promise to boost team productivity. What are these solutions? How can they help us?

What do our publishing partners have to offer so far?

Artificial Intelligence solutions are already embedded in retail tools. What do they bring? What's in the roadmaps?

Should I be afraid of AI?

All these promises come at a price! The best tools in the worst hands are a risk we must at least be aware of.

What impact does it have?

Apart from the fear of misuse or abuse of the tools themselves, we absolutely must consider the social and environmental consequences. While the benefits may still seem somewhat hypothetical today, certain impacts are already visible and measurable.

To keep you waiting, I'll leave you to reflect on this excellent talk about the encounter between infinite expectations and a finite universe.

My view on the impact of AI in CIOs in 2024 (at this stage)

AI is promising. That's for sure. But of what exactly? For the moment, the people I meet who expect AI don't know what to expect. The questions are like: tell us what it can do for us?

I've already noticed this tendency we all have to wait for the answer to all our problems (*). Especially those we don't know how to express. Like the philosopher's stone, we haven't found it yet! That's my impression at the moment, as the conversation turns to this new subject.

So let's clear the air. Let's not be afraid to talk about the other side of the coin, so that we can finally make the most of these new technologies without losing our natural common sense.

(*): yes, we know it, it's 42!
